Survival Tips for Emergency & Disaster Situations

Using common sense is highly underrated these days. Probably because we live in an age of unprecedented convenience and automation that allows people to leave their common sense at the door, and somehow still make it through the day unscathed.

This might work out okay during good times, but it’s absolutely critical that you are able to think clearly during an unexpected emergency or survival situation. Split second decisions could literally mean the difference between life or death.

You never know how things will actually go down during a crisis, but the last thing you need is panic and fear creeping into your decision making during a SHTF scenario. That’s why we put together these survival tips for you.

Here are Some Common Sense Survival Tips to Help You Survive Emergency & Disaster Situations

Survival Tip #1

Think Through Probable Scenarios Ahead of Time

The biggest oversight that most people make when making emergency preparations is simply not fully thinking things through ahead of time.

It can be almost impossible to know details about what will happen, when it will happen and what you will do. You need to carefully think through the most probable scenarios you may have to face where you live BEFORE you’re faced with them.

For example, what is your strategy:

  • If you are separated from your children?
  • If you are forced to evacuate your home?
  • For procuring the things you need if the power goes out for a long period of time?

Taking time to think things through now then you will make you better prepared if you ever find yourself in that situation.

Survival Tip #2

Develop a Plan of Action for Each Scenario

If you want to achieve success in a survival situation, you’ll need a plan of action. It is essential because without one, you could potentially put your family in danger.

There are certain critical things and actions you may need to plan out — like making sure your family members know where to meet if you get separated, and what to do if someone gets sick.

It’s also really important to have a backup plan so that you know when to change course if the scenario becomes unsafe. That way, you can maintain a clear head when you are dealing with unexpected circumstances.

Common sense planning will help you prepare for the worst and hope that you never have to face a grim reality.

Survival Tip #3

Research a Variety of Survival Techniques

Researching a variety of survival techniques is essential and simply just a good idea. Having more than one way out of a serious and potentially life threatening situation increases your chances for survival.

Use search engines to your advantage to research techniques that may be useful in your specific scenario. Then learn and practice the techniques with your family so that everyone is familiar with them when it’s GO time.

The more techniques and strategies you have at your disposal the more adaptable you can be. This is why it makes sense to research and practice a variety of survival techniques now, before it’s too late.

Survival Tip #4

Don’t Take the Basics for Granted

The best survival tip we can give you is to get the basics covered. It is very easy to overlook certain simple things when tensions are high and you have to make split-second decisions.

Gather your basic needs for food, water, warmth and shelter in advance in case you need to evacuate quickly. Make sure you have bug out bags for each family member including your pets. Keep them accessible so you can grab and go.

Consider having more than one bug out bag that you can keep in the car or in your office. Since emergencies happen unexpectedly it’s a good strategic move to have preparations in more than one place.

Using common sense in a survival situation might be challenging, but all  you need to do is prepare for the journey in advance.

Tell us and everyone in the comments below, what your best common sense tips are for survival scenarios.
